Heavy weight is the desired main course. To that end come the various ingredients that help create this main course...one of them being often neglected and always dreaded, high rep days. Neglecting the little weights can compromise progress toward the big weights…..here is what we mean….

Sometimes, especially for newer to the sport lifters, “programming,” can be a confusing term. How to build it, what goes into it, so many variables and nuances to consider. A trap the newer powerlifter can fall into is confusing the bells and whistles within a training program, from the key ingredients. It is like grilling a steak….you can put a dozen spices or seasonings on it, but it is important to remember that the key to it is finding an excellent cut of meat, and grilling it just right. If those two aspects are neglected or left to mere chance and only the seasonings are the focus, well, there lies the problem. As we are powerlifters, a steak analogy seems apropos.
The point we are trying to make here is there are some basics to a good training program, and putting in the reps is one of them. Said another way, like lifting big weights, stacking big bricks when building is essential but it is the mortar between the bricks that allow for the big bricks to work properly as well as for duration. Repetition with the smaller weights during longer training cycles are those days that we joke about and call “cardio.” Sets of 5’s, 8’s and even 10’s are not fun nor easy to do for athletes who like to be all about one-and-done. The harsh reality is, max weight as the lone tool for strength and power development will leave the lifter falling short of their full strength potential.
One reason to point this out is that love it or hate it, lifters post a lot of their training on social media and most of that is the big lifts, and this can give an illusion that folks go heavy singles all the time. The reality is there are also lighter days https://www.elitefts.com/coaching-logs/why-big-guys-use-little-weights/ or as in this case this Easter and Passover weekend at the M.G.G., a lot of high reps.
High rep days are for sure not the most “post worthy” of sessions, but ultimately, come meet day, the work will have either have been put in or it won’t and that is what I am really talking about here. It is the non-sexy, rote but critical basics that have always been the staples of success for the truly great powerlifters.
The accompanying video highlights some of the high rep work put in this weekend (edited down for the short-attention-span-theater observers) with some of the lifters also doing some singles and doubles. Currently we have powerlifters training for the AAPF Nationals as well as Relentless.
As a supplemental note on this holiday weekend...Dave Tate talks a lot about balance in powerlifting and how being out of symmetry in your overall life, can work as a detriment to your lifting goals and aspirations. Family, training, spirituality/beliefs, work, being four examples of these pillars of life-balance. With that as a philosophical backdrop, this Easter weekend at the M.G.G. the lifters came in on a Saturday as the Easter or Passover weekend is one of those times when the training schedule is modified so one still hits their training but then make the time to spend the day with their family or reflecting on their beliefs and/or spirituality. Happy Easter to you, from the gang at MONSTER GARAGE GYM!!!!
Wishing you the best in your training and competitions. Ever Onward, Eric Maroscher, Owner: MONSTER GARAGE GYM
