Do you compete in Weightlifting or Strongman? Or do you just like to Press heavy shit overhead? If you answered yes, I’m going to give you a Quick Fix for your Press. Get Your Head Through on each rep.
Of all of the flaws, or technical mistakes I see in the press, getting the head through is one of the major ones. And it’s one of the easiest to fix.
Why do you need to Get Your Head Through on the press?
The main reason is that getting your head through on the Press is that it gets/keeps the bar over the centerline of your body. Keeping the weight over your center maximizes your leverages allowing you to lift more.
It also minimizes shear force on the lumbar spine versus standing bolt upright into the lean back as many do. Anything we can do to reduce or minimize shear is good. Especially if it helps us lift more.
Further, driving your head and neck through at the top allow your traps to elevate and stabilize the bar much more efficiently. Once again, this helps you lift more.
If you watch the video below, you’ll see Mariah getting better and better as she drives her head through. As an FYI, Mariah is Dr. Mariah Lombard. One of my doctors. She competes at a very high level in Crossfit competitions and is STRONG.
We made a few tweaks to her technique and I’ll bet we see a 225 pound Jerk soon due to this.
