Hunter had his orientation yesterday at the University of Michigan for a Hockey Camp. April messaged me that he was a bit intimidated by all the "big kids", and the sheer AWESOMENESS of it all. From his point of view, it's one thing to be a hockey player from a state that really isn't known for it's big production of players in the NHL and be good, but THIS....THIS IS Hockey Town USA.
I needed to do some long distance damage control.
So I message back (then later talk to him) things to remember.
1. He is there NOT to demonstrate his hockey skills, but to ACQUIRE MORE hockey skills. (Thanks again Vinny D for this reference)
2. He is THE youngest player, and they don't "hit" at his level. So SKILL (which he has in abundance) will play a very important role not only here, but in his future as a hockey player.
3. Because of his age, the older kids are NOT allowed to "check" him (too hard)
4. He LIKES contact already...sooooooo?????
5. It's CAMP! Not a tryout. Not a score keeping game...It's CAMP and CAMP is suppose to be FUN!!!!
6. He's a Selkow. A thoroughbred all the way. Which makes him a WINNER and NOT a whiner.
7. He's from California...and remember the kid from California in the movie "Remember The Titans"? "Suuuunnn...SHINE!"
Everyone thinks all we do is surf, get a tan, listen to Beachboy music and smoke pot!
Nuh uhhh...a couple people actually are really good at playing HOCKEY too, and Hunter is ONE OF THEM!!!!
He felt much better after we spoke. Now to see how he did later on today after his first REAL day.
Bench: Work up to a six rep max
Beat last week
D.B. Floor Press: Add 5lbs more per dumb bell over last week: 75x15; 85x15; 95x15
Cable Lateral Raise: 3x30x20
Shrugs: Felt really awful...3x15x495
as a matter of fact, EVERYTHING felt really heavy today. I think all the planets are lined up on the opposite side of the world causing a larger than normal gravitational pull.
I took the 45 lb. bar out for a warm up set of benches and thought my elbows and shoulders were going to come unglued.
I used some extra duct tape on them and got up to a solid and disrespect-able weight.
You can't stand in the same river twice!
And the sad part is that a lot of the college camps have the best teachers of the game available.
My best friend growing up traveled (for us) a long way to go to Michigan State's camp and he always had a ball.
Hopefully Hunter has a good time, meets some new friends, and can't wait to go back next year.
And I hope he's not like my oldest and bet the son of an NHLer about the outcome of a scrimmage.
