Let’s talk about commitment, intent, being methodical and a host of other things. In today’s article, Old Man Conjugate: Do It With Purpose I’ll let you know what I mean, and I’ll keep it brief.
I stole the phrase “Move with purpose” from one of my former Coaches, Greg Robins. I heard him say it to a client once and it really hit home. It was simple, elegant and succinct. Overall, an A+ cue and philosophy.
Today I was coaching Gabby, one of the Doctor’s from our team at Refined Performance Physical Therapy. All of the Doctors at Refined train with me for a few months in order to help them better serve people we refer to them. They understand what we do which helps them better treat patients.
That is amazing.
Anyway, today was my first time working with Dr. Gabby and she is pretty strong. Gabby has a background in Weightlifting and CrossFit. Did I say she was strong.
Well, the first thing I noticed during her warmup was a great amount of attention to detail. She was adhering to Old Man Conjugate: Do It With Purpose. Every movement or pattern she did was precise and perfectly executed.
When she got under the bar however, things changed.
I started he off on an empty bar for Squats and she lackadaisically unracked with a split stance and took 87 steps back. I am confident that she would not do this with a weight that was challenging.
She did not do it with purpose.
I demonstrated how to unrack and why that is how it’s done and a light clicked. She got it.
As the session went along, her pretty good squat turned into an awesome one.
I had her focus not only on the cues I was giving, but to do each movement with intent, to do it with purpose.
We discussed what do it with purpose meant. I’ll give you the bullet points below:
- Move with intent
- Be methodical
- Respect your task
- Have a repeatable set up for your lifts
If you watch many people lift, they don’t give respect to the light weight and use better form as the weight gets heavier. They have no purpose here.
Shouldn’t you do as the GOAT Eddy Coan says and treat the light weights like they are heavy?
Old Man Conjugate: Do It With Purpose can be applied to just about anything. Don’t just randomly do shit. Focus on what you are doing. Pay attention. Give it 100% of your effort, whether it be performing an equipped bench press or walking down the street.
Move with purpose.
