Well, Monday was a big day. The truth is, I've been sick for about the last 2 weeks and I've put together 2 training sessions in those 2 weeks. I've spent several days just...in bed. I've had to force myself out of bed at 6 in the evening just so I could force myself to eat SOMETHING for the day.
Monday came around and the only thing that I wanted to do was REPEAT the last 2 weeks. The reality of how I feel on most day is not exciting and it is not motivating. The reality is that I'm in a lot of pain and I feel like crap. But I had done NOTHING for days! So I grabbed my gym bag and headed out to the gym. My intent for the day was:
1) Drive to Mayfield (15 minutes away) and squat and bench press press SOMETHING
2) Leave by 5:00 and drive to Paducah (another 30 minutes away)
3) Find my old student's new Karate school and put on pads and get inside of a ring
So...
Squat
warm ups
500 x 3 x 2 sets
570 x 2
620 x 2, recent PR
Bench Press
225 x 3 x 2 sets
275 x 3 x 3
315 x 3
Add blue Sling Shot
315 x 5
Add black Sling Shot (freaking awesome)
315 x 5
The black sling shot even works to blow your nose on!
Finished off with some stretching and then out the door, headed to Paducah.
Arrived at the Karate school and was SOOOO excited! I can't say enough about Josh, maybe in a personal video one day I can express how proud I am of him.
Warm ups nearly killed me
Sparred with my best friend Shane Solomon and he beat me up pretty badly and I nearly puked afterwards. I then got on my knees and sparred with a couple of children, helped a few adults, but was just dead. It then came my turn to spar with Josh and there is nobody that I trust more than him. Not only have I beaten him hundreds of times but I fully know two things (1) He will not beat me up (2) He is THE World Champion!
He knocked me down, he picked me up, he fought "at my level" and encouraged me...and then I sat down in a chair for a long time!
Near the end, Josh called me out to tournament fight with Shane again. Man, he beat the crap out of me in warm ups and I have NO GAS to go for more than a minute...so my game plan was to go all out for as long as I could and try to end the fight as fast as possible. I got lucky and my plan worked as he was just right behind me on every point. I'll say this, if there was no ref to yell break, I would have been in serious trouble.
After class I sparred Josh again and it is soooo much fun! I can try everything that I can come up with and I still see this young boy in front of me, except now he has figured out everything that I tried so hard to teach him as a child. In fact, now he can teach me and we can learn from each other. I can't wait to get back.
