The purpose of this Coaching Log is to help illuminate the fact that behind the titles, records, medals and spoils of a successful powerlifting team, exist the gardeners who work with the iron and sweat that is the rich dark soil of a gym’s garden. And being tended to in that garden are the seeds that will take root and that will grow into that powerlifting team’s future champions, title holders, medal winners and record breakers.

The MONSTER GARAGE GYM/MAROSCHER POWERLIFTING TEAM definitely has its share of lifters who have international wins (14 to be exact), ALL TIME record holders, thousand-pound-squatters and the list goes on. These are typically what one thinks of when they think of the criteria of the successful powerlifting team. This would be a truth, but only part of the truth.
In my over 25 years as a competitive powerlifter, I have had the good fortune to have trained with and led some successful powerlifting teams and the other truth beyond the wins and accolades is the deeper truth of the successful powerlifting team, and that truth is that team’s gardeners. At the MGG we have a handful of gardeners who, in addition to being successful powerlifters, are also gifted when it comes to growing the future success of the team. The future of the team can be a younger lifter, or a master aged lifter (who is just now finding this sport). The bottom line is, for a garden to grow it has to be tended to and looked after by a gardener who is at skilled at teaching their craft as they are performing their craft, the craft of powerlifting.
So whether you look at a garden through the eyes of Francois-Marie Arouet aka Voltaire, or Ernie Frantz aka The Godfather of Powerlifting, or Dave Tate with his Team ELITEFTS, the garden is essential.
The MGG gardener featured in this week’s ELITEFTS/MONSTER GARAGE GYM Coaching Log video is Ronald Legarreta (IPF World Powerlifting Championship competitor, USAPL Masters Powerlifting Champion, Military Nationals Powerlifting Champion). Ronald is a coach’s coach, a gardener’s gardener, and although the programs he puts together for his Saturday crew (which includes IPF World Powerlifting Champion Dr. Rob Keyes and AAPF RAW Nationals Powerlifting Champion Robert Bain, to name a couple) is outstanding, it is nothing without the technique he emphasizes and the tenets, the beliefs, the doctrine and history of powerlifting that he instills in these new to the sport lifters, and future champions of the successful powerlifting team.
As you build your garage gym, your own powerlifting team, remember that the best lifters you know in powerlifting were once newbies and someone tended to them and grew them into the champion they are today by complementing that lifter’s hard, consistent and focused work with their guidance/coaching/gardening. Programming, frills, and the ever-advertised “powerlifting secrets” equal zero as well as potentially disastrous injury without sound foundations, fundamentals, hard work and consistency, consistency, consistency.
Wishing you the best in your training and your team building!!!!! Ever Onward, Eric Maroscher.
