You’d think after over 30 years in this business I’d have some idea on how to get things up and running the right way out of the gate. If you did, you’d be wrong. There’s a Learning Curve. On everything.
And with that in mind I am writing today for my TEAM, my gym members and clients and other gym owners.
In case you didn’t know, TPS just moved into it’s fifth, and final location last week. Take a video tour of it here. We were forced to downsize from 10,000 square feet to 4000 for reasons beyond the scope of this article. As my TEAM and I debated the layout, what will fit, what to keep and 1000 other details of the move we thought we had it right when we implemented the plan.
Or at least we hoped. We also realized that changes would need to be made and we would not know what they were until we were operating.
Well, to my members, we didn’t get it exactly right. The new space had a few flow problems in the first week and I think some people weren’t happy. To them I say please bear with us.
You see, There’s a Learning Curve. On everything. And even though I’ve set up my own locations five times and consulted with countless others on facility layout and design, you never get it right the first time.
But, we have made adjustments and things are getting better already. And none of the TEAM is stressed because we’ve all been here before. We know that things will need to be moved, things will have to be sold, procedures will have to change and so much more. In business you plan for anything you can think of, but sometimes Mr. Murphy stows along for the ride.
And he did here.
But we’re kicking him out.
One thing is that I overestimated floor/flow space and once we moved stuff in we all realized some had to go.
It sucks not having 10,000 square feet to put anything you want, but we will find a way to adapt.
Another thing is layout. What seemed like a good idea when the gym as empty ended up being awful when it was busy!
As Gunnery Sgt. Highway says:
- Improvise
- Adapt
- Overcome
The man’s not wrong.
Moving the gym and setting it up had a myriad of challenges because There’s a Learning Curve
On everything.
One of the reasons I am saying this over and over (Besides for SEO) is that I want you all to realize that this applies everywhere.
- In relationships.
- In business.
- In work.
- At a new skill you are trying to learn.
- In training.
- Everywhere.
So, if upon your first crack at doing something new or setting up new procedures or spaces, don’t get discouraged if the first try isn’t the winner.
It seldom is.
As a matter of fact, I spoke about this yesterday and let people know how we constantly tweaked and rearranged every location we had for better use and flow. It is normal. And that’s why none of us are worried about the new space being a success.
We’ll figure out the right layout as we go along and things will be AWESOME.
Remember as you do something new going forward, There’s a Learning Curve, On everything. Execute your plan, then improvise, adapt and overcome.
