There is more noise than ever where training is concerned. Everyone has an opinion. Lots of people think they are experts, but very few are.
When in doubt about anything training these are my go-to coaches:
MATT RHODES
Matt and I have been friends for a long time. He coached me up and through my first 600 lb raw bench. He is a great sounding board for all things strength and conditioning.
JIM WENDLER
Another one of my best friends. Jim has been teaching me forever to look at the big picture. Jim sees nuance better than any other coach I know. He is the epitome of teaching you how to coach yourself if you are smart enough to listen.
HARRY SELKOW
The first time I met Harry, I was enamored. I was well over 300 lbs, out of condition, and working through my forties. Harry was everything I wanted to be especially being 10 years my senior.
Harry is a badass in shape m'fer who takes and makes no excuses. When I told Harry I wanted to get in good shape for my age he said "F@ck that get in shape for your age sh!t, just get in shape!" I have been living those words ever since.
DAVE TATE
If it were not for Dave I would have been lost after I finished competing as a high-level lifter. He changed my life in so many ways. Dave made me realize I was much more than a powerlifter. He has given me sage advice on training, weight loss, and most importantly life.
With forty years of training under my belt I fall victim to overthinking a lot. On the regular, I am hitting these guys up for advice. They cut through all the bullish!t and get me on the right path. I am grateful to have such great coaches, mentors, and friends in my life.
Luckily with social media, the internet, books, podcasts, etc, these guys can be your coaches also. If not them, make sure it's someone. We all need people to keep us on the right path.
