...the highlight reels are heavy and hard core, but what the big boys have learned a long time ago is in order to be able to put up the big numbers, you have to also put the time in with the not so big numbers….here is what we mean….

The purpose of this coaching log is to help shed light on the stuff that sometimes remains in the dark and that is the non-sexy, non-max effort, non-highlight reel worthy stuff. I know what some of the newer to the sport lifters are thinking, to hit BIG numbers you have to train with BIG numbers. That is certainly true. But within that truth lies another truth and that is to sustain the BIG numbers one must also lift the not-so-big numbers.
To help illustrate this point I have enlisted the help of two of the larger land masses at the MONSTER GARAGE GYM. Those masses are Bill Lee and Steve Brock. Bill and Steve recently competed at the 2017 ARNOLD where Steve totaled 2400LB total (975LB, 750LBS, 675LBS) equipped and where Bill totaled 1980LBS RAW (*770LBS, 440LBS, 770LBS). *2 years almost to the day after a meet accident required 3 knee surgeries, 1 elbow surgery and 2 one week stints in the ICU.
Both of these big boys have been in the power game for many, many years and they know that powerlifting is not just about big numbers, but big number sustained over a long period of time. To that end, both of these guys focus on the little numbers too. The lighter weight, higher rep stuff that to some, just plain old doesn’t seem to be hard core. I can assure you as Steve has squatted over a grand and Bill has pulled over 800, both are hard core, but both are also smart lifters and know that although you can put the pedal all the way down and go 100 mph, there will be sharp turns in the road and that is why good lifters know when to downshift and hit the little weights.
I see Steve come in to the gym for the big lifts, but he also makes his way to the MONSTER GARAGE GYM on the off nights to roll out, work on mobility and flexibility, use the x-wife and hit those high rep “bodybuilding” type lifts. Same goes for Bill. Big numbers at the MONSTER GARAGE GYM then on other nights he heads over to Atlas (another really great gym) and makes sure he puts in the work on the auxiliary stuff. Let me use a little food to drive this message home. Steak is great, but throw in an awesome salad, an excellent soup and a fantastic Tiramisu for dessert along with the steak, and you have a complete meal. The seemingly insignificant light weights, like the soup, salad and dessert create a more complete training program when used in combination with the big weights.
In the accompanying video you will see some of the work that Bill and Steve put in with the heavy weights to get them ready for this past 2017 ARNOLD, then we go to a few clips with them on the light stuff to show that these big boys actually do the light stuff too.
It is this combination of the big and small weights combined with their serious work ethic that prepared Bill and Steve for their Excellent Adventure at the Arnold. So, keep in mind, the awesome highlight reels are in part produced by the essential not so big weights that make up the supplemental work that helps complete the powerlifters overall strength and durability.
Wishing you the best in your training and meet prep. Ever Onward, Eric Maroscher, Owner: MONSTER GARAGE GYM
