Yesterday a sales rep from a meal prep company came in the gym and pitched us on selling their healthy and locally made meals for people. I’ll tell you, the food looked pretty good and seemed like real food. But, You Gotta Read the Label.

Now before I go too deep into this, I’m letting you know that I am not going to say what company it is, but it’s a fairly popular one. And if you look at their website, it’s slicker than pig snot and says all the right things like:

  • Locally made
  • Made by restaurant owners
  • We put your nutrition on autopilot with fresh made
  • meals delivered
  • Our team of chefs prepare and we deliver your meals fresh, directly to your home.
  • Dietitians and Chefs create a nutritious balance of flavor and quality

There is tons more slick sales copy and I’ll tell you, the food in the package and the pictures on the site almost had me. It all looks good, and as I said, they said all the things a nutritionist (me) or a health conscious person would want to hear.

Real, locally made and freshly cooked healthy food that fits my macros with a focus on protein? Sign me up.

Wait, let me read the label.

This is where the problem arose.

Here is some of the ingredients:

  • Liquid Whole Eggs [Whole Eggs, Citric Acid, 0.15% Water added as a carrier for Citric Acid]
  • Egg White Liquid
  • Raw Sugar
  • Unsweetened Almond Milk
  • Potassium Citrate
  • Sunflower Lecithin
  • Gellan Gum
You Gotta Read the Label, C.J. Murphy;

You Gotta Read the Label! If I didn’t I may have considered signing up because it’s priced ok, saves me time and looks healthy. But it’s not.

Looking at those ingredients I have many questions.

Such as why processed and not real eggs?

Why added sugar?

WHY OH WHY Almond Milk? It’s fucking poison.

How do you milk an Almond?

Why added seed oils?

This is supposed to be a locally made and freshly delivered. If it is freshly made and delivered why so many preservatives?

Why add seed oils when you could use olive oil or another healthy option?

Why all the chemical preservatives?

Looking at the ingredients this isn’t much better than any other frozen meal in the stores.

I’d argue that you’d be better off with a Steak and Cheese sub from a nutrition standpoint. At least it’s real food with no added chemicals or preservatives. No, I’m not saying that a Steak and Cheese sub is healthy!

Really, you gotta read the label.

This also goes for many items you get in the grocery store. I see a ton of clients that tell me they eat a lot of Greek Yogurt. I ask them why. They tell me it’s healthy. And it is .

But, I ask are they eating fruity flavored Greek Yogurt. 90% of the time they say yes. I tell them they need to read the label. When they do they see how much added SUGAR is in it. That's not healthy.

It’s not just Greek Yogurt. It’s most of the food we see and buy in the grocery store.  That’s a topic for a whole series of articles.

Start reading this labels kids.
