If you’ve ever checked the ingredients list on your favorite store-bought protein bar, you’ll know that along with the protein, you're getting a ton of ingredients you can barely pronounce. More often than not, a hefty handful of sugar is thrown in as well. When you factor in the high cost of these treats, the only logical step is to put them back on the shelf and make your own. I’ve had a few goes at this, and have finally settled on something so simple that it only has six ingredients.

These bars are so tasty, they are literally the best protein bar I have ever eaten. Seriously, you’ve got to give these a go.

Ingredients

8 scoops chocolate protein powder

2/3 cup ground almonds

1/2 cup milk

2 tablespoons desiccated coconut

2 tablespoons peanut butter

100 grams  sugar-free dark chocolate

Instructions

Combine everything except the chocolate into a mixing bowl. Give your forearms the best workout they’ve had in ages, 'cause this stuff is thick! Once you have it combined, it should be one heavy lump of brown mess. Now break it up into six pieces and roll them out into sausage shapes. They should look horrifying.

Next, take your protein turds and flatten them out into bar shapes.  Place them in the freezer for 20 minutes to harden up. Take the chocolate and melt it in the microwave or over a bowl of simmering water. Take care not to overheat or burn it. Once the bars have hardened up, coat them all over with the melted chocolate, and then place them on a sheet lined with baking parchment. Let them set in the fridge.

There are two reasons for coating them in chocolate. The obvious one being that they taste great, but secondly you also preserve the bars and stop them from spoiling.

Cocoa is a great anti-oxidant, so surrounding your bars not only stops the air getting to them, but forms a wrapper that will keep them tasting fresh for about a week if you store them in the fridge.
