Just like Laura Smith explains in her article, I too dismiss a lot of trending articles that fill my Facebook news feed. Think of all the regurgitated posts covering Ronda Rousey within the last two weeks. In a short span of time, there was the Ronda Rousey's 34-second win against Bethe Correia, Ronda's "I could beat Floyd Mayweather," to Ronda's, "I'm not a do nothing bitch."
On top of that, every male office worker that lifts weights felt the need to convince his 2,000-friend Facebook circle that he undeniably could pick Ronda up at any given time and throw her to the ground if ever they were in a ring together.
Seriously?
Although I absolutely adore Rousey, after reading the same three stories ten times each I stopped paying attention to anything Ronda Rousey.
One day later from my I-had-enough epiphany, Dave forwards me an article link he found from the Autism Speaks Facebook page: When We Asked Ronda Rousey If She Had Apraxia of Speech. He shares how "this is a very cool story" to read and ends the email stating how "she seems to have a big heart." Without debate, I read it.
Ashlynn and I will always have that moment — that moment when we met a true fighter who overcame apraxia and so much more, just like I believe Ashlynn will.
Incredible story.
If you, like me, dismissed the overflow of articles highlighting Ronda Rousey in the past couple of weeks, be sure to read this one. It's a compelling story of how Ronda Rousey restores hope for a family touched by Apraxia.
There are tons of great books out there on how to improve as a strength athlete. Prior to my last meet, I found that reading Ronda's book helped guide my training and focus under the bar more than any other powerlifting specific books or articles encountered during my meet prep.
In a week where Joe Schillero has pointed out what we can learn from The Godfather** and apply to the platform, I'd highly recommend going outside of strength literature and reading "My Fight/Your Fight" to become a better strength athlete!
