Stop Optimizing Your Way Out of Getting Stronger
I was listening to someone talk about training the other day.
Not training. Talking about training. There's a difference.
Forty-five minutes in, the group was still going. Optimal rest intervals between sets. The most evidence-based periodization model for their specific goal. Which macronutrient ratio maximizes hypertrophy while preserving recovery capacity? The correct supplement timing window. Whether their current program had adequate specificity of adaptation or needed to be restructured from the ground up.
Nobody had touched a bar yet.
I sat there feeling like Leeroy Jenkins the entire time.
If you don't know the clip, A group of World of Warcraft players has been deep in a planning session for over a minute. Probability calculations. Resource management. Assigned roles. Everyone has a job and a strategy. Every variable accounted for. And then Leeroy just walks in, yelling his own name and charges the room.
It goes badly. Sort of.
But Leeroy moved. And that's the whole point.
Nobody's Touched a Bar Yet
I've been in and around strength training since 1983. Competitive powerlifting through 2004. Coaching, educating, and running elitefts since 1998. I've watched this sport move through every era of information it has ever seen.
The conversations have never been longer. The bars have never been lifted less frequently at the same time.
That's not a coincidence.
The amount of information available today is real. The research is real. I subscribe to research publications and read them. I'm not here to tell you science is the enemy. Louie Simmons built an entire system at Westside Barbell around studying the science, field-testing it under real load with real athletes, and refining it over decades. The Soviets had strong science programs going back further than most of today's coaches have been alive. This is not new.
Science is not the problem.
The problem is what people do with it. Or more accurately, what they do instead of training because of it.
There are two groups I see all the time. The first group uses research to confirm what they already believe. They hunt for the studies that validate their current program, post them, quote them, and use them as proof that what they're doing is correct. They're not learning anything. They're collecting permission slips.
The second group uses research to endlessly recalibrate before they've done anything long enough to actually generate real feedback.
Both groups have the same problem. They're still in the raid meeting, while others are already in the room pulling weight.
Forty-five minutes in. Nobody's touched a bar yet.
Most of the time, all that planning isn't optimization. It's self-protection. And the bar knows the difference.
Science Isn't the Problem. Hiding Behind It Is.
Here's what I've noticed about the people who never stop optimizing.
Most of them are afraid of the bar. Not physically afraid. Mentally.
They don't want to commit to something, run it hard, and find out it didn't work. Because if the program fails, that reflects on them. Their choice. Their effort. Their judgment. But if they're still refining the plan, the plan can't fail yet. That's not training. That's self-protection dressed up as productivity.
I've written about leapfrogs before. A lifter decides they want to get to the other side of the stream. They jump to their first program. It works for a while. Progress slows. Instead of pushing through the hard part, they start researching the next program. They jump again. More progress. More friction. More research. Another jump.
They move, but they never arrive. And every stretch between programs, they're completely convinced the next one will finally be the right one. Meanwhile, they're telling themselves this is smart training. This is doing the research. This is not quitting.
It's quitting. Just slower. And with better language around it.
The ones who actually get strong pick something, run it into the ground, learn from what breaks, and adjust. Not before training. During. After. That is the education. The adjustments made inside a program are what work, not the program itself. The program is just the starting point. The real information only comes once you're inside it long enough for your body to start talking back.
You can't get that feedback sitting in the meeting. You have to go into the room.
Trench Knowledge vs. Meeting Room Knowledge
There is a kind of knowledge you can only get from training. Not reading about training. Not watching training. Doing it.
You can read everything ever written about how the body responds to submaximal loads. You can memorize every study on conjugate periodization. You can debate intensity percentages, volume landmarks, and weekly frequency guidelines until your phone battery dies and your coffee is cold.
None of that will teach you what it feels like when you're at 90 percent of your max, and your hips start to shift on the way up. It won't tell you when to push through and when to shut down the session. It won't show you which accessory movement will expose the weak point you don't even know you have yet. It won't teach you how to grind through a missed lift and recover, or how to manage your head in the last two weeks before a meet when everything feels wrong.
That stuff lives in the trenches. You can't get it any other way.
Strength training is a learning circle, not a learning curve. At the bottom, you know nothing. You do what you're told, and you make progress because the training is honest and so are you. In the middle, you've got experience, some scar tissue, and some real knowledge built through repetition. You start to figure things out. At the top, the confusion isn't the science. It's that you start to see how much you still don't know after all those years. The ones who have been around 20 or 30 years and have done the actual work, those are the people who are genuinely confused. Because they've seen enough to know how complicated it really is.
The ones who never leave the ground floor are the ones who tried to skip the circle by reading their way through it.
You can't read your way through a deadlift. You have to pull it.
The adjustments made inside a program are what produce results. Not the program itself. The program is just the starting point. The real information only comes once your body starts talking back.
What Actually Happens When You Just Go
Two things happen when you stop planning and start training.
If it works, you're so far ahead of everyone still in the meeting that you can't see them in the rearview. While they were arguing about whether three or four sets were more appropriate given their training age and current recovery capacity, you ran three sets twice a week for four months and put 50 pounds on your squat. You have data now. Real data. Not theoretical. Not based on what should happen under controlled conditions. Based on what actually happened to your body when you put real weight on it over real time.
If it doesn't work, you still win.
Because now you know something you didn't know before. Your body gave you feedback that no study could have provided. Something didn't work the way you expected, and you know it because you felt it and lived through it. Not because someone told you it might happen under certain conditions in a 12-week trial with untrained subjects.
Leeroy didn't survive the raid. But he had chicken. And his team now knew exactly what didn't work and why. The ones in the planning meeting still knew nothing they didn't know before. They had a better plan for a raid they never ran.
Failing at something real beats succeeding at planning something imaginary. Every single time.
At Some Point You Just Have to Say Fuck It and Go
I'm not telling you to be reckless. I'm not telling you to walk in and wing every session forever without structure or direction.
What I'm telling you is that there's a line. On one hand, planning serves you. You understand what you're doing and why. You have a structure. You're not just guessing and hoping.
On the other hand, planning protects you from having to put in effort. It's a way to stay comfortable while looking productive. It's a way to feel like you're doing the work without actually being under the bar. And most people deep in the optimization conversation have been on the wrong side of that line longer than they realize. Because the wrong side looks responsible. It looks intelligent. It looks like you're taking this seriously.
The bar doesn't care what it looks like.
The fix is simple. Not easy. Simple.
Pick something you can commit to and actually run. Not something that's perfect. Something that's good enough to start with. Run it long enough to learn from it, which means long enough to hit friction and push through it, not abandon it the moment progress slows. Make adjustments along the way, not before. Quit when you have a real reason to quit based on real information, not because something better showed up on your feed.
Then do it again. And again after that.
That's the circle.
