When Opportunity Knocks, Answer The Door!
Some days I feel so fortunate. When you hang out with the right people, opportunities engage you. Social networking is one way to get to know people but attending conferences, workshops, education seminars will give you so much more and if you are as lucky as me those opportunities will keep on knocking.
SWIS2015 is where a lot of it started for us but SWIS2016 was a game changer. We met so many cool people, smart people and just down right genuine people. You’ve heard me talk over and over about Dr. Ken Kinakin who is the brain and bronze behind SWIS and without him none of this would have happened. Today I’m going to talk about Dr. Stuart McGill.
Some of you will recognize his name the second you see it, others have never heard of him. Chances are if you are an athlete or have ever had any back issues you know him as a World renoun back specialist. Dr. Stuart McGill is a professor of spine biomechanics at the University of Waterloo (Ontario/Canada) and has created BackfitPro.com and specializes in products that assist in preventing and rehabilitating back pain.
After meeting Dr. McGill at the SWIS2016 and speaking with him amongst a group of some of the strongest men in the world, one being William Kazmier (The Kaz) and Patrick Hallaway we soon discovered we had a few things in common. We are very particular about back safety and the mechanics of training in order to best optimize our bodies with our training. Dr. McGill was interested in hearing about our home gym and how we have a crew that lifts with us. Dr. McGill offered to come out sometime while the crew was squatting to offer some advice on technique, help with mechanics or for whatever we needed. WOW seriously that would be so cool, Ken and I both looked at each other and left that day saying WOW Stu McGill wants to come to our gym!!!
He is like a superstar in our eyes. He was also quite interested in hearing about my back surgery and my recovery. He was amazed at how well I was doing and to my surprise he had watched me lift at the Arnolds in 2015. What a small world we live in. November 2016 Dr. McGill asked if he could do a photo shoot in our home gym for an article he was writing for Men’s Health. Hell yeah we said that would be really cool. The shoot went amazing and Dr. McGill even used some of the pics in his new book.
So a couple weeks ago we get another message from Dr. McGill wanting us to participate in another photo shoot for his new book that is co-authored by Brian Carroll called "The Gift Of Injury". This time the photo shoot was held at ETS (Elite Training Systems) in Whitby and I was so honoured that Dr. McGill wanted me to model for him. I’m no fitness model and don’t consider myself photo shoot material but when someone wants a “Strong Woman” who can be a good role model for others, I can't turn that down.
Dr. McGill also returned to out Outlaw gym to get a few more pics of Ken with our equipment here. What an amazing opportunity and amazing guy he is.
During and after the photo shoot Dr. McGill was kind enough to offer me advice and suggestions on how to train around me knee injury and pain. When someone of this caliper offers you advice, you take it and do it, period. Don’t ever take for granted good advice because good advice usually comes at a cost and is really hard to find.
If you are having any back pain, back issues, have questions about back health and longevity, look no further. Pick up a copy of one of several of Dr. McGill’s back books right here at Backfitpro.com
I shared my book with my training partner, she reduced her back pain and learned how to properly care for and maintain her back. You can too, the choice is yours.
I'm excited to see the new book when it comes out, I will be sure and share it with you so you can pickup your copy!
Until then, keep your back safe and strong.
