I enjoy the fact that I am now responsible for my son's "Dry land" training. We do a team workout after the two practices during the week, and I get to lead their warm ups Pre Game. The Pre Game warm ups allows me to crawl inside their nine and ten year old heads and get them mentally prepared while physical prep is going on. I like to choose a single topic that can be echoed through out the game. I check with the Head Coach to make sure it's in line with his "game plan" and usually it is. Yesterday's game, my message was loud, clear and very simple. "DO YOUR JOB" They're little boys playing like Olympians. They want to WIN and think that it is ALL upon their own individual shoulders once the puck is dropped. Do YOUR Job, kept them reminded that the game of Ice Hockey is not only about individual efforts, but positional awareness and seeing where the game is flowing to and from. Wayne Gretzky has said, "see the puck to where it is going to be, not where it is" (or something like that), but for God sake, BE in the position to MAKE the play. The coaches have told my son to go up closer to the net, his fear is that he can't get back to play Defense fast enough. The coaches KNOW his capabilities and trust in them. They have given him more freedoms because of his speed. However..."to whom much is given, MUCH is REQUIRED". Do Your Job! Means to do as the Coaches have instructed and you to know what you are capable of. He faired well, but knows there are things he needs to improve. The entire team knows this too. They did well, but need to improve. I am pleased to say...They Did their jobs.   Floor Press: Work up to a Three Rep Max.
