When Dave sent me this picture, my first reaction was one of disbelief and horror. Then I thought about the genius of this exercise.

First, we all know why belt squats are so good. They are a great way to train your legs and hips without any spinal loading. This is perfect for all athletes.

But having a bar on your back allows the lifter to maintain proper squat form or to alleviate any kind of form issues without loading the bar.
