Exercise Name: Guard Back Extensions
Muscles Targeted: gluteals, hamstrings, hip adductors, iliopsoas complex, spinal erectors
Setup & Execution: Locked onto the top of a flat bench with a guard (between legs) position. Hold for time or execute hip extension / flexion under external load.
Benefits: Unlike the conventional movement that only engages hip extension and is performed on a GHR bench, roman chair or back extension, guard back extensions also engage the gluteals according to their pennation and muscle actions; hip extension, hip adduction and external rotation.
