It's easy to criticize people, especially when coaching . After all we always tell people that we're not "Cheerleaders", right? So we pick out the flaws and focus on fixing them in order to improve a person's performance. This is wrong, that's wrong, this is a bit weak, you are compensating for... you get it. You can only beat a person down so many times until they stop listening. It just as easy to point out the things a person is doing RIGHT! Here's the thing, the moment I tell a person to "Don't do ...whatever" what do they do? They DO IT! So what if I teach them what I WANT them to do the first time. THEN...when it's flawed, I can reaffirm the right things and tweak the things I don't want them to do in order to get the desired results. Further more, tell a person to do ONE thing! According to Buddy Morris, that person has an 87% chance of remembering it. The moment I tell a person TWO things, the percentage of retainment drops quickly to 33%. What happens when a third element is added to the day's teaching? Yup, who knows and good luck with that?
