The MONSTER GARAGE GYM/MAROSCHER COACHING LOG is a weekly Coaching Log by MGG owner, 2-Time WPC World Powerlifting Champion, Eric Maroscher, and is one of the Featured Coaching Logs at EliteFTS. LIVE, LEARN and PASS ON. MONSTER GARAGE GYM is one of the premier powerlifting gyms in the US. Monster Garage Gym/Maroscher Coaching Log: (Log number XLIII). “THE NOUGAT-TRAINING COACHING LOG” ________________________________________ This Coaching Log features Navy E-3, Big Zach. Zach is a gas turbine system electrical technician or GSE. Zach is a RAW powerlifter (675LBS squat RAW/wraps, 470LBS bench RAW and 675 deadlift RAW), and is a light 275LB class lifter. The purpose of this training log is to take a look at some of the stuff that happens in between Zach’s heavy deadlift training sessions and his volume deadlift training sessions. When using “the internets and the Googles” there is a good ton of footage you can find showing maximum effort deadlift, and some volume deadlift training. What we want to show you is the stuff that is key to your deadlift training, but is often times not ‘sexy’ enough to make the training reels or high light footage. As this coaching log is for powerlifters, we will use a food analogy. Everyone LOVES a good Snickers bar. It is a candy bar (Mmmmm, candy bar) made of chocolate and peanuts. So, for our analogy, the chocolate is the max effort and the peanuts is the volume. See what we did there?!?! But the reality is, the stuff in the middle, the stuff that you never really think about nor really see featured is holding these two key ingredients together…and that is the Nougat (nu-get). The nougat is comprised of a variety of little ingredients (honey, almonds, walnuts, pistachios, hazelnuts, macadamia nuts, egg whites, and some fruit). This is the stuff that enhances the two main ingredients. So, just like there is max effort deadlift, and volume deadlift, it is the stuff in the middle, the back training nougat if you will, (pull downs, low rows, db rows, reverse hyper, etc) that is the stuff in the middle that enhances the two main ingredients. Simply put, the two main movements are supported by the ancillary movements as the ancillary back exercises enhance these primary movements thus exponentially benefiting the max effort and volume days’ efficacy. If you are a newer or intermediate powerlifter, note how Zach uses strict form with a little cheat-assist when needed to squeeze the last few reps out. Note also, although Zach can deadlift a good amount of weight, he is not wrapped up in the amount of weight he can use in these ancillary movements, but rather how much weight he can use and still maintain the proper technique as sloppy form with ancillary exercises is a waste of your time. *Leave the ego at home during Nougat training days.
