I saw my regular physician today and after examination he determined the discomfort I am having is being caused by my piriformis muscle. The muscle is a small dense muscle in the butt that sits directly above the sciatic nerve and when inflamed or knotted up can press against the nerve causing the radiating nerve pain down my leg. I had actually suspected this because of the differences between this pain and the pain I had when I had a herniated disk. However the pain was similar enough that I was concerned that I had another back injury. He gave me a little more prednisone, dug his elbow into the knot some, gave me some stretches to do and told me to kick ass in August. I couldn't be more please given the circumstances.
