Snatch Grip Deadlifts are an excellent exercise to increase the deadlift for powerlifters and the snatch for Olympic Lifters. Using a snatch grip on deadlift increase the range of motion by forcing the lifter closer to the floor. This adds to the range of motion and requires great starting strength and because of the deficit. Snatch grip deadlifts also overload the "first pull" for Olympic lifters, slowing the weight down and reinforcing proper mechanics. Finally, the snatch grip also requires more upper back recruitment and aids the lifter in "staying tight" through the movement. Adding mats will simulate the distance of a conventional deadlift while still benefiting from the wider grip.
